Abstract

|
The authors present 27 cases of chronic osteomyelitis treated either with muscle flaps or cutaneous flaps with or without microvascular technique. Only one of 27 cases developed a recurrence of infection and the remainder healed well without specific complication.
The results are as follows;
1. Two factors appear to be important in the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis;
(1) adequate aggressive debridement and (2) adequate soft tissue coverage with well vascularized tissue.
2. This treatment method provides 2 advantages as compared with other previous method; (1) high curability and (2) early rehabilitation.
3. There is no clinically significance in postoperative result between using the local flaps and free flaps.
